The division undertakes surgical treatment of the diseases of thyroid gland, parathyroid glands and breast diseases. Goiter is a common problem in Kerala.

The department of surgical oncology undertakes surgical treatment for various solid cancers arising in most parts of human body along with diagnostic procedures and complex reconstructive techniques. 

The department directly deals with evaluating new cases and carries a vital role in treatment decisions and multispecialty board discussions (MSB). The department is in involved new case clerking, clinical assessment, and coordination of imaging, biopsy and lab evaluations of all cancers except lung and chest wall tumors. Surgical oncologists are the primary physicians for most of the solid cancers treated in MCC-PGIOSR.  

The department has expanded to include new staff and new services last year including neurosurgery and ocular oncology. Surgical oncology department has taken the lead in digitalizing the medical records. 
Currently there are four operation theatres and a brachytherapy theatre used as a procedure room.

Unit Of Endoscopy:

Current facilities – OGD scope, colonoscope, side viewing scope, bronchoscope, EBUS/EUS, Savory Gillard dilators. ERCP and esophageal stenting are offered. 

Dr Jaseem Ansari joined as a visiting consultant in Gastroenterology and started regular service of ERCP, Esophageal stenting. He visits the center on Fridays and offers OP and IP consultations and procedures.

Unit of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics:

The Clinical Nutrition unit is one of the inevitable parts of the cancer institute. Nutrition Oncology is a new weapon in cancer treatment. This includes not only an understanding of the basic dietary needs of cancer patients but also the role of nutrients in the pathogenesis of cancer and the role of diet in the prevention and treatment of cancer. This unit emphasizes to provide through nutritional education and dietary advice to all indoor and outdoor patients in the hospitals. As per the requirements, indoor patients are provided with a nutritious diet from the hospital canteen under the guidance of the unit. Along with medical nutrition therapy, Fellowship courses, training programs, and workshops are conducted in the various field of nutrition, for medical and non-medical staff. 

Current facilities/services – Nutritional assessment, nutritional management, parenteral nutrition,  enteral nutrition services, pediatric care, palliative nutrition care, weight management.  

Unit Of Speech And Swallowing:

Current Facilities - Clinical evaluation  ( speech, voice, swallowing ),Speech therapy, Voice therapy, Swallowing therapy, Laryngectomy voice rehabilitation. Prophylactic exercise therapy, Instrumental swallowing assessment :- FEES, VFSS, Counseling (pre and post treatment )

Unit of Physiotherapy:

Current facilities - Physiotherapy Division play a pivot role in both prehabilitation and Rehabilitation services of MCC-PGIOSR. It provides consultation of both Inpatient and outpatient according to reference of surgical oncology, radiation oncology, Medical Oncology, Pediatric Oncology and palliative medicine according to clinical report, evaluation and assessment provides proper physiotherapy management.

1. NEURO-ONCOSURGERY

Regular service started on 03/11/2022.
FACILITIES
● Surgery for tumors involving brain, calvarium, skull-base, vertebral column, spinal cord and peripheral nervous system.
● Advanced operating microscope.
● Facilities for awake brain surgery and intraoperative neuromonitoring for better functional preservation.
● Availability of navigation system and facilities for performing minimally invasive
navigation guided biopsy.
● Drill, CUSA for performing tumor surgeries.

2. OCULAR ONCOLOGY

Ocular Oncology under the Department of Surgical Oncology offers comprehensive eye examinations and is backed by a strong multidisciplinary oncology team. It offer the best available treatment for Retinoblastoma that includes periodic examination under anesthesia, Intravitreal Chemotherapy, Cryotherapy, Laser therapy, Transpupillary Thermotherapy along with Systemic Chemotherapy. Intra Arterial Chemotherapy is the most advanced treatment modality for Retinoblastoma. However, due to the huge financial burden, it is not accessible to all in developing countries like India. A great milestone has been achieved at MCC-PGIOSR through performance of Intra-arterial chemotherapy (IAC) It is affordable and acceptable to children with Retinoblastoma from all socioeconomic strata of the society. The facility achieved success in treating conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma, ocular surface squamous neoplasia with topical and intralesional chemotherapeutic agents, avoiding the morbidity of surgery.

MCC-PGIOSR is one among the few centers who have a plaque brachytherapy unit for the treatment of uveal melanoma. This treatment allows us to treat cancer without removing the eye —preserving vision, independence, and quality of life. Also for eyes which are not salvageable, enucleation with placement of a custom fit prosthesis/ artificial eye are performed. Apart from diagnosing and treating ocular malignancies, routine ocular screening in pediatric patients diagnosed with leukemia, diagnosis and treatment of the ocular toxicities of systemic chemotherapeutic agents and radiation, and ophthalmic evaluation of patients diagnosed with neurological tumors pre and post- surgery are also performed..

UROONCOCON 2022, 26-27 November, 2022. Hotel Benale Internationl, Kannur. The conference was attended by 112 delegates and faculty including surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists and urologists from various prominent centers in India.
