Nuclear medicine (NM) is a specialized branch of medical imaging that utilizes small amounts of radioactive materials, called radiopharmaceuticals, to diagnose and treat a variety of conditions. It offers information on functional status of tissues duing diagnostics opening scopes for creating personalized treatment plans. Throughhybrid imaging modalities like Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), and like PET/CT and SPECT/CT, nuclear medicine enables healthcare professionals to visualize physiological processes at a molecular level. This non-invasive approach helps in identifying abnormalities, such as tumors, infections, and metabolic disorders, with high sensitivity and specificity, leading to more accurate diagnoses and improved patient outcomes.

In addition to its diagnostic capabilities, nuclear medicine plays a crucial role in therapeutics, offering targeted treatments for various conditions, including malignant and certain non-malignant disorders. Radioactive substances used in therapy, known as radiopharmaceuticals, are administered to patients either orally or intravenously, delivering radiation directly to the affected tissues. This targeted approach minimizes damage to surrounding healthy cells, reducing side effects and enhancing treatment efficacy. Nuclear medicine therapies, such as radioiodine therapy for thyroid cancer, radionuclide therapy for neuroendocrine tumors, metastatic prostate cancers etc provide effective alternatives to traditional treatments, offering hope to patients with advanced or refractory diseases. With ongoing advancements in technology and radiopharmaceutical development, nuclear medicine continues to evolve, offering innovative solutions for diagnosing and treating a wide range of medical conditions.
