What can you do to prevent cancer?
1. Protect your skin from excessive exposure to sunlight: by using protective dresses or an umbrella or sunscreens in case you have to remain in sunlight for long.
2. Stay away from tobacco and alcohol: You can always seek medical help for quitting from tobacco cessation clinic functioning at MCC PGIOSR on Wednesdays from 9am to 5 pm. Any time is the best time to quit.
3. Eat healthy:
-Eat a balanced diet with plenty of vegetables and fruits, legumes, whole grains and nuts. Fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants and capable of repairing your damaged cells daily. Choose whole grain instead of refined grains and sugars.
-Reduce the consumption of red and processed meat. Choose fish, poultry as an alternative to beef, pork, and lamb.
-Reduce consumption of fat.
-Attention to the way you cook food, do not consume charred and burnt food especially meat. Do not reuse cooking oil and never heat oil above its smoke point.
-Limit your intake of free sugars especially sugar rich drinks.
-Avoid extra salt in your diet
4. Get moving with regular physical activity: You need at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week as per WHO (Adults should get at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity, above their usual daily activities, on 5 days or more a week. Children need more). Brisk walking, swimming, skipping, dancing are a few of them.
5. Maintain a healthy weight: A balanced diet and regular physical activity will definitely help you to maintain a healthy weight as per your height. Know your body mass index (BMI). A BMI of 19 to 24 is normal, 25 to 29 is overweight and 30 and above is obese.
6. Know yourself, your family history, and your risks: Though hereditary cancers are less than 5%, knowing your family history will guide you in regular screening.
7. Have regular checkups and cancer screening tests: Consult a doctor in case you have any symptoms suggestive of cancer warning signs. Undergo regular screening.
a. Oral screening for all especially those with habits: get examined by your dentist
b. Breast screening: Do regular self breast examination every month. Clinical breast examination at the early cancer detection centres in nearby primary health centre or mammography every 2 yearly if you are above 45 years.
c. Cervical screening: Undergo Pap smear test every 3 yearly at nearby primary health centre.
d. Colon cancer screening: Those above 50 years with family history of colon cancer can undergo colonoscopy or fecal immunochemical test.
