Department of Preventive and Community Oncology started functioning as a full-fledged department since January, 2010. The department has been regularly conducting cancer awareness classes, early cancer detection camps, volunteer training programs, health awareness exhibitions and school tobacco awareness classes in 5 districts of northern Kerala (Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad, Malappuram ,Kasargod, Palakkad ) and Mahe (U.T. of Pondicherry).The department plays a major part in various Panchayath and District based cancer control projects . A tobacco cessation clinic and an anti-tobacco cell function under the department.
Mission & Vision Statement

Vision:

    The cancer burden is rising nationally and regionally, exerting significant strain on populations and health systems. The department envisages cancer control through primary and secondary cancer prevention strategies. Most common cancers in India are lung and oral cavity cancer among men and breast and cervical cancers among women. These cancers can be effectively prevented through early cancer detection programs and tobacco control measures. Cancer prevention and control is a significant and growing public health concern requiring attention, investment and prioritisation.

  • To provide cancer and tobacco related awareness for general public
  • To provide community based cancer detection services especially in rural and remote areas
  • To provide school based tobacco awareness programs
  • To provide tobacco cessation services for public
  • To assist in setting up and promoting cancer control activities in society

Scope of Services

Cancer Awareness programs

Cancer awareness campaign: cancer awareness classes for general public and health workers in cooperation with various organizations, residential groups, clubs etc.

Tobacco awareness campaign at schools: anti-tobacco awareness classes using audio visual aids are conducted at different schools.

Exhibitions and observation of cancer related health days:

cancer and tobacco awareness related health exhibitions are organized at different public programs and schools. World no tobacco day, National cancer awareness day, World cancer day etc. are observed with massive public programs.

Trainings and workshops: Training in tobacco control and cancer screening for health workers (JPHNs, nurses) and volunteers, are regularly conducted.

Nurse based Associate Centres which provide cancer screening services are successfully functioning at Kannapuram, keezhpally, Cheruvathur, Alakkode with nurses trained in the department

Awareness generating public competitions: painting and literary competitions are organized for school children and general public on tobacco control and cancer prevention.

Providing assistance in various government programmes for cancer control

Cancer Screening programs

Early cancer screening camps oral, breast and cervical cancer screening camps are organized at different districts of the state namely Kannur, Kasargode, Wayanad, Calicut, Malappuram, Palakkad and Mahe (U T of Puduchery).

Survey based screening camps

Tribal community programmes tribal camps at Aralam, Attapadi,Waynad.

Risk group screening camps for HIV patients, sex workers etc.

Tobacco cessation clinic

Tobacco cessation treatment is provided to those addicted to all forms of tobacco use. People identified at the camps are directed to the department OPD. Division also conducts various tobacco awareness programs for public and school children. Research on various aspect of tobacco use is also conducted in the division. Tobacco cessation OPD functions on all Wednesdays.           

Anti-tobacco cell

Anti-tobacco cell was formed on 31-10-11. The cell consists of eminent personalities from different walks of life like teachers, Journalists, Social activists, writers, janamythri police etc. The main aim of cell is to educate the student community and public on the menace posed by the tobacco use.           

Community participatory research activities

The department also conducts various community based studies and research for the betterment of public health
