The Division of Transfusion Medicine at MCC provides clinical services to support patients in need of blood component therapy, aphaeresis components, stem cell collection, therapeutic aphaeresis, irradiation of blood and specialized laboratory diagnostics. The aim of a Blood Bank is to provide effective blood components, which are as safe as possible, and adequate to meet the patients need. This is one of the most well equipped blood bank in the North Malabar region and caters also to outside patients of hospitals in and around Thalassery & Kannur. From 2010, the centre had achieved 100% issue of blood components.

Blood Transfusion Service is a vital part of health care. Increasing advancement in the field of Transfusion Medicine has necessitated enforcing measures to ensure quality of Blood and its products.

The division organizes blood donation camps to meet the demands of the hospital. In addition, blood grouping & awareness classes are conducted routinely, thereby generating greater public interest in blood donation and transfusion related diseases.

The division has also conducting one year institutional Fellowship programme in Apheresis Medicine from 2018 onward.

Courses Conducted: The short-term training and preparation for research projects is being provided to students of different Universities and Laboratory technicians of different institutions.

Hospital Infection Control activities: The division of Microbiology is an active member of the hospital infection control committee (HICC). The division carries out surveillance of hospital-acquired infection (HAI) with the help of the infection control team. Laboratory records are analyzed to determine the rate of infection in various areas of the hospital. Presently the surveillance is passive and is based on the laboratory records of culture-positive cases. Apart from surveillance of HAI, environmental surveillance activities are also carried out which includes air sampling in critical and semi-critical areas. In addition to this, the infection control practices are also routinely monitored by the following activities

  • Sterility checks of the new pre-sterilized articles purchased by the hospital or the efficacy of the new disinfectants to be purchased is done when desired by the concerned authority.
  • In use test of the disinfectants used in the hospital Monitoring of CSSD
  • Surveillance of pathogens.
  • Infection control policies in force: disinfection, surveillance, isolation, antibiotic and chemoprophylaxis.
  • Continuing medical education (CME) programme held regularly.
