THEJUS- 'BREAST SUPPORT GROUP'
Breast cancer is the commonest cancer in Kerala. As its one of the cancers where early detection can be done, dissemination of information to the general public is of utmost importance. This organization was formed in 2009 at Malabar Cancer Centre-Post Graduate Institute of Oncology Sciences and Research under the name "Thejus”-as suggested by one of the members of the organization. The inauguration of "Thejus" was done by renowned Cine star Smt. Kaviyoor Ponnamma on 30/9/09. Thejus group has conducted awareness programmes on Breast cancer screening at various panchayat levels. With the early detection and newer therapeutic modalities more and more patients are surviving the disease. Surviving after treatment may produce new physical challenges to the patient. Classes were conducted for patients on topic "Lymphoedema care and Breast reconstruction surgeries" with the aim of preventing long term problems to the patients. National Breast Cancer awareness day (Pink Ribbon Day) was observed on 25/10/10 and activities included conducting of Exhibition & Distribution of Pamphlets to general public. On that day Pink Ribbon was worn by all the patients and staff of MCC-PGIOSR. Awareness class was conducted on FM radio; we plan to conduct similar programmes that will be aired through mass communication media. As a part of our support to cancer survivors we have started a Self employment programs such as Handicrafts and Jewellery making. This is intended to give the patients and their family a fresh perspective into the future and make them feel that they are loved and cared by the society and beyond that the society needs them.
