What are Platelets?

Platelets are part of blood, which along with other factors in blood are essential in stopping bleeding. When platelet count is low, bleeding may occur from any part of the body and can lead to serious complications.

Who can donate?

Any person

Aged between 18 to 65, and weight above 60kgs.

Must be healthy and meet medical requirement

Must have prominent vein in elbow.

Attend on regular basis (at least once in year)

If so, we have a specialist team available to discuss the possibility of you joining our platelet donor register.

Who needs Platelets and why we need more?

Patients with

Cancer, Leukemia,

Post surgery bleeding,

Dengue Hemorrhagic fever,

Bone marrow transplant

Are either unable to produce enough platelets or their consumption is more.

Platelets have the shortest shelf life of all blood components, lasting only five days. This means we have a constant need for platelet donors to ensure we meet the needs of these patients.

How do we collect Platelets?

The process is similar to giving blood, but we use specialist equipment called a cell separator. The cell separator extracts platelets from donor blood and the rest of the blood returned back to the donor. The donation typically lasts from 60 to 90 minutes, during which time you can read or simply relax.  You can expect the whole process takes up to 2 hours.

How much platelet is collected? Won’t it make me weak?

Less than 10% of your platelets will be harvested during platelet donation. The total volume of your donation will not exceed 8% of your blood volume. The donated blood will be replaced within 48 hours.

How often can I donate?

Platelet donors may donate up to 24 times a year with a minimum interval between donations of 2 days as the cell separator returns your red cells to you. In contrast a whole blood donor can donate maximum of 4 times a year.

We operate an appointment system which offers varied hours for your convenience.

Is platelet donation safe?

Yes. Platelet donations are performed in a highly-controlled, sterile environment by professionally trained staff. All platelet collection equipment is sterilized and equipment that is in contact with the donor's blood is used only once, eliminating the possibility of transmitting any viral infection

Will medication affect my platelet donation?

You cannot donate platelets if you have taken aspirin, aspirin-containing medications, like pain killers, such as Ibuprofen, Diclofenac in the last 48 hours.

Once I start donating platelets, can I still donate blood?

Once you join the platelet panel, we ask you to give platelets only. This helps us maintain our supply of platelets to patients by having a panel of committed donors on whom we can call. If you wish to return to donating blood after donating platelets, then you will need to wait 4 weeks before donating blood.
